Wareham and Sombre initially met via their mutual association with Spacemen 3's Peter Kember (aka Sonic Boom), who helped produce Sombre's 2009 debut, on which Wareham played guitar. In many ways, they are a well-matched pair -- laconic cowpokes with distant eyes and voices that often tremble like desert brush in the breeze. Vocally, Wareham is the brighter singer, his easy tenor bringing to mind a hippie version of Gene Autry. Conversely, Sombre has a breathy, dark baritone that's a good match for tracks like Townes Van Zandt's \"Greensboro Woman,\" which he performs here with a narcotic intensity. Particularly compelling is the duo's reworking of Blaze Foley's deeply melancholy ballad \"If I Could Only Fly,\" in which Sombre sings against a slowly rising backdrop of bass and synth that's equal parts Velvet Underground and Joy Division. Clear references are made to Marshall's previous full-lengths, and repeated allusions to water -- as in sinking -- as well as blue as a color and feeling, are likewise threaded throughout. Damp, suffocating city streets are never distant. When Marshall retreats to physical solitude, he can't leave his head -- not even with a prescription, a situation related in a whirling frenzy of insomniac agitation titled, naturally, \"Emergency Blimp.\" Marshall is just as expressive and evocative when he keeps it guttural; \"She smoked me whole and blows out Os,\" over decayed, dispirited bossa nova, passes like a wisp but could be the album's emotional center. The band's commitment to taking chances reaps rewards elsewhere: \"Dangerous\" kicks off I See You with a brass fanfare that's about as far as the xx can get from the plaintive seduction of their early work. Indeed, the album's happiest songs are among the best, whether Sim and Croft are falling in love all over again over contrail guitars on \"Say Something Loving\" or letting a relentless beat give their flirtation momentum on \"I Dare You.\" When the xx pare back, they do it with purpose, and still find subtle ways to push themselves. In another act's hands, the propulsive self-doubt of \"A Violent Noise\" would be a club banger, but they opt for simmering tension instead of drops and peaks. Croft shows off her seldom-heard upper register on \"Lips\" and \"Performance,\" one of several moments on I See You where the band's self-awareness borders on meta. Sometimes, this becomes too literal and repetitive; as enjoyable as the sultry swagger of \"Replica\" and heartfelt balladry of \"Brave for You\" are, it's hard to shake the feeling that the xx are retracing their steps. It's easy to see why they were so impressed: The Pixies' essential sound -- Francis' unearthly shriek of a voice, David Lovering's propulsive drumming, Joey Santiago's insistent, prickly guitar playing, and Kim Deal's sugar-and-sandpaper vocals and steady basslines -- arrives fully formed on songs like the bouncy, yet twisted, surfer-girl ode \"Ed Is Dead.\" Influences like '80s college rock peers the Violent Femmes, the Stooges, Lou Reed, and hardcore punk crop up on songs like \"I've Been Tired,\" the group's surreal take on sexual frustration, and \"Isla de Encanta.\" Most importantly, the EP introduces the spooky, theatrical vision the group brought to their simple guitar-bass-drums lineup. Francis' lyrical fetishes for sex, death, and religion and his twisted sense of humor crop up on every track, from the eerie opener \"Caribou,\" which urges listeners to \"Reeeeepent!,\" to the final song, \"Levitate Me,\" which borrows Christian folksinger Larry Norman's catchphrase: \"Come on pilgrim, you know he loves you!\" \"The Holiday Song\" and \"Nimrod's Son\" provide voyeuristic, back-to-back glimpses at incest, as well as the priceless lyric, \"My sister held me close and whispered to my bleeding head\/You are the son of a motherf*cker\" (from \"Nimrod's Son\"). While the guitar work is a focal point of her style in general, it regularly borders on mesmerizing on her full-length debut, 2018's Lush. Balancing dreamy, complex chords and seductive melodies on the instrument, songs like \"Speaking Terms\" and \"Let's Find an Out\" have the subtle effect of seeming to sing with accompaniment before her voice makes an entrance. When it does enter, her vulnerable vocal delivery, combined with vexed lyrics that are both confessional and observational in nature, often sounds like a private, handwritten letter that, once out of her system, she'll immediately crumple up and leave burning in an ashtray. At the end of \"Golden Dream,\" for instance, she rants \"Stupid, stupid me\" for a cathartic 30 seconds. She's joined on most of the album by drums and bass, giving further texture and volume to her own forthright presence. One of a couple exceptions to that is the aforementioned \"Let's Find an Out,\" which has especially light drums and percussion, in contrast to the crashing cymbals of certain other moments on the record. That opens up space for spare keyboards and anxious rumination. Even the lusher, more driving tracks like \"Pristine\" and \"Full Control\" still feel intimate, though. That's due to not only her lyrics and impulsive style of melodic phrasing, but to the hazy quality of her guitar tones, and the wistful, subtly rich chord progressions that come across like complicated moods.
