Less expected is the album's loose cowboy theme. As evoked by the title, this collection of songs by country luminaries like Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, and Marty Robbins (as well some traditionals, standards, and lesser-known covers), brings to mind a late-'60s spaghetti Western buddy movie with Wareham playing the wandering troubadour and Sombre the cool-eyed poet\/gunslinger. However, rather than a dramatic shootout, this showdown plays more like a low-key acid Western, as our dreamy space cowboys seemingly trade songs over a warm campfire under a lysergic desert twilight. Joining them on their relaxed cattle run is producer Jason Quever, who previously helmed Wareham's 2013 Emancipated Hearts EP and Luna's own reunion covers album, 2017's A Sentimental Education. Also on board is Luna bassist Britta Phillips, some members of Papercuts and the War on Drugs, and others. Together, they craft a lush, cavernous sound, draping Wareham and Sombre in ripples of twangy guitar, woody percussion, piano, and, as on Wareham's poignant rendition of the cowboy anthem \"My Rifle, My Pony and Me,\" a woebegone bowed saw. Wareham and Sombre initially met via their mutual association with Spacemen 3's Peter Kember (aka Sonic Boom), who helped produce Sombre's 2009 debut, on which Wareham played guitar. In many ways, they are a well-matched pair -- laconic cowpokes with distant eyes and voices that often tremble like desert brush in the breeze. Vocally, Wareham is the brighter singer, his easy tenor bringing to mind a hippie version of Gene Autry. Conversely, Sombre has a breathy, dark baritone that's a good match for tracks like Townes Van Zandt's \"Greensboro Woman,\" which he performs here with a narcotic intensity. Particularly compelling is the duo's reworking of Blaze Foley's deeply melancholy ballad \"If I Could Only Fly,\" in which Sombre sings against a slowly rising backdrop of bass and synth that's equal parts Velvet Underground and Joy Division. Despite a pair of intellectually funky moments -- \"Morning Mr. Magpie\" and \"Little by Little,\" grouped together at the beginning, giving the album a slight hint of momentum that quickly fades -- this is rather monochromatic and not too far removed from the territory Radiohead began etching out with Kid A. Where that icy 2000 effort had the bracing chill of the new, The King of Limbs is familiar -- not commonplace, but carrying a certain inevitability as its eight songs slowly unspool. Clear references are made to Marshall's previous full-lengths, and repeated allusions to water -- as in sinking -- as well as blue as a color and feeling, are likewise threaded throughout. Damp, suffocating city streets are never distant. When Marshall retreats to physical solitude, he can't leave his head -- not even with a prescription, a situation related in a whirling frenzy of insomniac agitation titled, naturally, \"Emergency Blimp.\" Marshall is just as expressive and evocative when he keeps it guttural; \"She smoked me whole and blows out Os,\" over decayed, dispirited bossa nova, passes like a wisp but could be the album's emotional center. The band's commitment to taking chances reaps rewards elsewhere: \"Dangerous\" kicks off I See You with a brass fanfare that's about as far as the xx can get from the plaintive seduction of their early work. Indeed, the album's happiest songs are among the best, whether Sim and Croft are falling in love all over again over contrail guitars on \"Say Something Loving\" or letting a relentless beat give their flirtation momentum on \"I Dare You.\" When the xx pare back, they do it with purpose, and still find subtle ways to push themselves. In another act's hands, the propulsive self-doubt of \"A Violent Noise\" would be a club banger, but they opt for simmering tension instead of drops and peaks. Croft shows off her seldom-heard upper register on \"Lips\" and \"Performance,\" one of several moments on I See You where the band's self-awareness borders on meta. Sometimes, this becomes too literal and repetitive; as enjoyable as the sultry swagger of \"Replica\" and heartfelt balladry of \"Brave for You\" are, it's hard to shake the feeling that the xx are retracing their steps. The cooler textures and digital sheen of that album certainly informs Lamp Lit Prose, but this time out the music has a much more organic feel, with natural horns, guitars, strings, and percussion dancing within the electronic frameworks. There's a palpable joy in this music that hasn't been so strong in Longstreth's work since 2009's breakthrough Bitte Orca, and while it never turns sappy, Lamp Lit Prose speaks of hope and second chances in the more optimistic tone of the music, reinforced by the percolating rhythms, the breathy harmonies, and the angular enthusiasm of the guitar work. Like Bitte Orca, Lamp Lit Prose is a genuinely adventurous work, not shy about pointing to Dirty Projectors' experimental roots, but the material also sounds bright, playful, and engaging, accessible even when the melodies and meters take unexpected left turns. In Rainbows represented an emotional thaw after the chilly, amorphous Hail to the Thief, whereas Tomorrow's Modern Boxes warms up the icy exteriors of Eraser. Yorke never attempts to abandon his fixation on pre-EDM electronica -- at this point, his affection for turn-of-the-millennium intelligent dance music could almost qualify as classicist -- but there's a scuffed warmth to much of this album, with the warped waves of keyboards gently gliding into a rhythm later articulated by a loop. Such aural sleights of hand never call attention to themselves but neither does the album as a whole. Tomorrow's Modern Boxes is deliberately underwhelming, an old-fashioned grower that doesn't startle upon first listen but rather slowly unfolds. Even then, the album is stubbornly subtle, with Yorke exploring the space between gaps, not the chasm itself. Less charitable listeners could call it mood music and they wouldn't be wrong, because Yorke and producer Nigel Godrich are so controlled, they offer variations of a theme instead of a wide palette. Bear liberally borrows from subaquatic balladeers like Ocean and James Blake, but is also indebted to Prince and Daft Punk, with all the lightness and joy that implies. The ballads are balanced by a handful of songs that have some swagger and fun in the grooves, like the bobbing \"Girl Like You\" or the bubbling \"Inside My Head,\" which has some seriously tough bass playing and one of Bear's best vocals.
